The trees shimmered in the moonlight from the newly fallen snow. The sky had cleared and the stars shone brightly in the heavens, lighting his path through the Forbidden forest. The North Star winked as if to acknowledge the lone traveler and the full moon smiled its encouragement.

Moony stopped to howl at his tormenter, but the moon only smiled in answer. The wolf howled one more time and getting no response continued on his way. Lights in the distance caught his attention and he followed his instincts that led to the little shack at the far edge of the forest.

Moony sniffed the air and finding a familiar scent, approached the door cautiously. He had no Wolfsbane, his lover being too ill to brew it and it was difficult for either of them to obtain supplies. They were both thought to be dead and they preferred things to remain that way.

Moony pushed open the door with his snout and entered silently. The occupant of the shack was in no danger. The wolf recognized the scent of his mate. Moony looked around. The shack was small, but clean. A tiny Christmas tree with a little tin star on the top, stood sparsely decorated in one corner. Underneath the tree were two plainly wrapped gifts, one for him and one for his mate. It wasn’t much, but it was all they could afford.

Near the hearth was a rickety bed that held Moony’s sleeping lover. He never heard him enter. He never even stirred. He was still weak, still recovering from the bout of pneumonia that had almost killed him.

Moony sighed with relief. His lover’s breath was even and his heartbeat steady. Moony jumped up on the bed and settled down close to Severus. He nuzzled his ear and was gratified when Severus wrapped his arms around him. They didn’t have a lot, but they had each other and that’s really all they would ever need
